Lumpectomy

Surgically removing the tumor/lump is the most conventional approach to early stage breast cancer.

Lumpectomy is often followed by radiation:
Radiation is used to destroy any remaining cancer cells. Until fairly recently, treatment targeted not only the entire breast, but also exposed surrounding healthy cells and organs to radiation.

A timely advance

MammoFocus targeted radiotherapy: The latest breakthrough in treatment options.

A revolutionary form of targeted radiation, MammoFocus confines radiation solely to the lumpectomy cavity plus a minute area of surrounding tissue. This precise application protects adjacent healthy tissue and organs, while allowing a higher dose of radiation to be delivered. The increased precision of MammoFocus decreases overall treatment time. Consider this dramatic difference: When the whole breast is targeted, treatments can take six to seven weeks of daily outpatient visits, while MammoFocus, also performed on an outpatient basis, requires just five days.

The benefit of time

While other types of targeted radiation therapies exist, only MammoFocus is the first truly non-invasive procedure-and the one you can count on for the most condensed, most convenient treatment time.

Why be treated invasively, when you can be cared for innovatively?

The two most common procedures require placing multiple catheters into the lumpectomy cavity or inserting a single balloon catheter into the area. In both cases, the catheters are secured to the outside of the breast, with radioactive seeds inserted into the catheters TWICE daily for five days. The seeds are removed after each treatment.

Five outpatient treatments-one per day NOT seven weeks.

Unlike these other procedures, which place the radiation source internally into the breast (brachytherapy), MammoFocus uses external beam radiation, precisely targeted at a small gold marker placed near the lumpectomy cavity. Using computer-calculated, three-dimensional beams of radiation (stereotactic), MammoFocus aims the beams directly at the surgical cavity. And, MammoFocus requires just ONE visit a day for five days.

An alternative to mastectomy or other targeted radiotherapies, Mammofocus offers several distinct advantages:

  • extremely precise-3mm or less
  • reduces radiation exposure to the heart and lungs
  • five-day treatment period (one treatment per day)
  • outpatient procedure
  • non-invasive
  • no cosmetic drawbacks-no external catheters
  • excellent outcomes

The MammoFocus difference

MammoFocus has all of the benefits of the other forms of targeted radiotherapy - high dose, targeted treatment, five day treatment time, protection of healthy tissue, excellent outcomes-but it is non-invasive, and requires no external catheters during the treatment period. The procedure involves using several external photon beams all aimed at the tumor bed. Inside the tumor bed are small seeds implanted by the radiologist after obtaining an MRI of the breast. The radiotherapy dose is concentrated precisely on the target, sparing surrounding tissue and organs. Extremely accurate, MammoFocus can be as precise as 3mm or less.
